Man arrested for killing wild birds with poisoned food

  • The suspect allegedly laid the poisoned food in his paddy field and the surrounding area to deter  birds from damaging his crops

The suspect was arrested by Bibile Police on Thursday night during a raid in the Kanulwela area in Bibile and handed over to the Bibile Wildlife Conservation Office for further action


An individual has been arrested for killing hundreds of birds, including Peacocks, Wild pigeons, Parrots, and Pigeons, by feeding them poisoned food. The suspect allegedly laid the poisoned food in his paddy field and the surrounding area to deter  birds from damaging his crops.

Residents of the area found dead birds strewn around the paddy field and the poisoned maize and had informed the police. During their investigation, the Police recovered around 50 dead Peacocks, 20 Pigeons, 25 Wild Pigeons, and several other birds.


The suspect was arrested by Bibile Police on Thursday night during a raid in the Kanulwela area in Bibile and handed over to the Bibile Wildlife Conservation Office for further action.


The killing of wild birds is illegal in Sri Lanka.
