The opposition parties, with diverse views, met with former  President Ranil Wickremesinghe and explored possibilities to work as  one team to take on the government.

Opposition MP Mano Ganesan told Daily Mirror that the  opposition parties, both with and without parliamentary representation,   have decided to work together to fight suppression including the move  by the government to limit slots for the opposition in the parliamentary  committees.

“This decision was made during the meeting which various parties had with former President Ranil Wickremesinghe.

“The opposition has not got sufficient slots in almost all  committees in Parliament. We have not been given sufficient slots even  in friendship associations and caucuses. Therefore, we discussed the  matter with the former President and other former members of Parliament.  They all pledged to back us to get more representation in committees.”  Ganesan said.

MPs Udaya Gammanpila, Anura Priyadarshana Yapa, former  Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena, Kanchana Wijesekera and a few others  were present at the meeting.

Mr. Gammanpila told media that all parties decided to work  together against suppression by the present government. “The country  is in a dark era and therefore we have decided to forget all differences  which we may have had in the past. These differences are not relevant  now. We agreed to work together, though there was no detailed  discussion on forming an alliance,” he said.

The former Speaker said the main objective of the discussion with Mr. Wickremesinghe was to build up a powerful opposition.
