Dengue sweeps across Sri Lanka

  • Over 3,000 cases in 10 days

  • Dengue cases cross 76,000

Sri Lanka is seeing a massive spike in Dengue cases across the country with the Western Province recording over 35,000 cases which is the highest in terms of provinces.   
According to the Epidemiology Unit, the tally of dengue cases recorded for 2023 has surpassed the 76,000 mark.  


As of November 30, a total of 76,086 cases have been reported in 2023, with the highest number being from the Colombo District, which stood at 16,125.  

Besides, the month of November has logged 7,593 Dengue cases, which is the highest in four months.   


According to health officials, dengue cases are pegged to further increase owing to the prevailing rainy conditions.   


In this context, people are urged to keep their surroundings clean and destroy mosquito breeding places in order to keep dengue at bay.   
Also, doctors request people to seek medical aid if symptoms such as high fever, headache, body aches last more than 48 hours.   


Furthermore, health officials state that the year 2023 will end with the highest cases reported in four years.
