Daily Mirror bags Runners-up at D.R. Wijewardene Challenge Trophy

The inter-department cricket tournament for the DR Wijewardene Challenge Trophy 2025 was held over the weekend at Shalika Grounds, Narahenpita. The team representing the Advertising Department registered a thrilling win over the Daily Mirror team in the finals. The Daily Mirror team finished as Runners-up.

A total of 22 teams representing various departments of Wijeya Newspapers participated in the tournament, which was organized by the company’s Welfare Society.

Thilina Weerawansa of the Daily Mirror team was named Man of the Series, while Darshana Sanjeewa Balasuriya received the Best Bowler award. The Best Batsman award went to Pasan Sanjaya, and Eranga Kumara was named Man of the Final from the Advertising team.

The Daily Mirror team reached the final after defeating Hokandara-A, Web, Design, and Circulation teams. Advertising-A secured their place by overcoming Dispatch-A, Daily Lankadeepa, Hokandara, and Dispatch-B.

In the women’s category, Head Office B won the championship, with Head Office A finishing as runners-up. Awards were presented by Wijeya Newspapers COO Janaka Rathnakumara, Daily Mirror Chief Editor Jamila Husain, AGM Advertising - Nipuli Weerathunga, Welfare Society President Duminda Sanjeewa Balasuriya, Vice President Ajantha Kumara Agalakadda, Welfare treasurer Roshan Thanthirige and Secretary Anuja Kumaratunga.

Leading Advertising company ‘Ogilvy’, Seylan Bank, and Janashakthi partnered as sponsors of the event.
