The protest was organized by the Mannar Citizens’ Committee (MCC) in collaboration with local civil society organizations, and was strongly supported by the Centre for Environmental Justice (CEJ). People from diverse backgrounds including youth groups, NGOs, women’s collectives, religious leaders, fisherfolk, and farmers participated in the demonstration.

Protesters raised serious concerns about the environmental destruction and livelihood losses these projects could cause. Mannar Island, known for its rich biodiversity and home to vulnerable coastal communities, faces grave risks from such exploitative activities. Residents who rely on the land and sea for their survival fear displacement, resource depletion, and the erosion of their cultural heritage.

The demonstrators demanded the protection of natural resources and called for genuine community participation in all development decisions. They urged authorities to pursue sustainable alternatives that respect both people and nature. The unified message from Mannar was clear: protect the island, protect the future.
