The Cabinet of Ministers this week gave its approval to establish a collaborative standing committee comprising representatives from various key institutions to expedite the implementation of renewable energy projects.
Sri Lanka has established an ambitious goal to achieve 70 percent of its energy generation from renewable sources by year 2030.
In November, the Cabinet of Ministers resolved to institute a new system aimed at swiftly executing renewable energy initiatives.
This decision stemmed from acknowledging the time constraints inherent in the current project implementation methods and anticipating the challenges that prospective investors may encounter under the existing framework.
Consequently, the Cabinet of Ministers this week endorsed a proposal put forth by the Minister of Power and Energy recommending the establishment of a combined standing committee comprising representatives from various key institutions.
This committee will be tasked with making decisions pertaining to renewable energy projects and ensuring the efficient and timely implementation of these decisions.
The committee will be chaired by the Presidential Secretariat, and its membership will include representatives from Prime Minister’s Office, Ministry of Finance, Economic Stabilisation and National Policy, Ministry of Investment Promotion, Ministry of Wildlife and Forest Resources Conservation, Ministry of Environment, Ministry of Tourism and Lands, Ministry of Industries, Ministry of Power and Energy, Ministry of Irrigation, Ministry of Water Supply and Estate Infrastructure Development, Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority and Ceylon Electricity Board.
