The Western province added the most to the country’s total output, with a share of 42.4 percent in 2024 but its share came down from 44.0 percent in 2023, while the combined share of the other provinces rose, in a reflection that they are gradually adding more to the total economy.
For instance, the North Western province, which had a share of 11.5 percent, became the second after the Western province and grew from the 10.9 percent share it had in 2023.
The Central province’s share to GDP rose to 10.7 percent, from 10.0 percent in 2023.
Most other provinces too, with the exception of the North Central and Southern provinces, increased their contribution to GDP than in 2023.
The Western province came on top in being the largest contributor to the country’s industry activities and services, with shares of 47.6 percent and 44.5 percent.

Sri Lanka recorded a 5.0 percent growth in GDP in 2024, after coming off from a negative growth in 2022 and 2023.
The government expects to replicate this growth in 2025 as well while wanting to expand the economy in the North of 7.0 percent in the medium term.
