Sri Lanka’s Women’s Chamber of Industry and Commerce (WCIC) has appealed for urgent support as the island battles what officials and agencies describe as the worst flood disaster in the nation’s history, leaving livelihoods devastated and businesses crippled across multiple districts.
With extreme weather submerging thousands of homes and disrupting economic activity nationwide, the chamber said women-led enterprises have been hit particularly hard, with many members reporting severe damage to facilities, inventory and supply chains.
While rescue operations remain the priority, persistent high water levels have slowed access to affected communities, delaying relief and assessment efforts.
Positioning itself as a coordinating body for assistance, the WCIC urged the business community and development partners to join its initiative to establish a dedicated fund aimed at supporting affected women entrepreneurs. The chamber said it will develop a structured methodology to ensure that available resources are channelled efficiently to those most in need.
WCIC requests those willing to contribute or collaborate to contact 076-6848080 or email [email protected]
