Tourist arrivals surpassed the 100,000 arrival mark within the first 20 days of October 2025, provisional data from Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) showed.

The Island nation welcomed 103,491 tourists during this period, marking a 20.6 percent year-over-year (YoY) increase compared to the 85,835 arrivals recorded in the corresponding period in 2024.

India continues to lead the influx, accounting for 28.5 percent of arrivals in these 20 days with 29,460 tourists. The subsequent top markets were the United Kingdom (8,529), China (8,063), Germany (6,305), and the Russian Federation (5,469).

This strong October performance has pushed the cumulative year-to-date (YTD) arrivals to 1,828,985 as of October 20. This total reflects a healthy 16.4 percent growth compared to the 1,570,643 arrivals recorded during the same period last year.

India also dominates the YTD figures, having contributed 404,752 tourists in 2025. The top five for the year is rounded out by the United Kingdom (170,422), the Russian Federation (127,613), Germany (113,293), and China (109,653).

Despite the positive growth, Sri Lanka is likely to face a challenge in achieving its revised annual target of 2.6 million arrivals.

To meet this goal, the country must attract an additional 771,015 tourists in the remaining 72 days of the year. This requires a demanding daily average of approximately 10,708 arrivals. This required rate is more than double the daily average of 5,175 seen in the first 20 days of October and substantially higher than the daily averages observed during the peak season months of November and December 2024.
