Sri Lanka must become a nation that not only earns foreign exchange but also saves it, said Industries and Enterprise Development Minister Sunil Handunnetti, emphasising the need to take locally developed innovations to the global market.
He made these remarks while addressing the launch of a specialised machine designed to remove debris obstructing hydropower plant gates, named ‘KILGHARRAH 600’, developed by the Sri Lankan engineering firm Thimark Technocreations.
The first order for this innovative machine has been completed and handed over to KenGen, Kenya’s semi-governmental hydropower authority, which supplies electricity to nearly 70 percent of the Kenyan population
The official handover was conducted by Handunnetti, who presented the completed system to the KenGen chief engineer and engineering team at a ceremony held recently at Cinnamon Life Hotel, Colombo. “As I learned, Germany was also among the bidders for this tender. The fact that a young innovator from Badalkumbura, Sri Lanka, was able to compete with a German product itself is a victory. Our producers and young people must become dreamers. To create an entrepreneurial revolution, our new generation must dream and not only dream but also fight to make those dreams a reality,” Handunnetti said.
He added that building such an entrepreneurial spirit is essential for the nation’s future success and stressed that Sri Lanka must become both a foreign exchange earning and saving country.
Provincial Councils and Local Government Minister Chandana Abeyratne also attended the event.
