A total of 43,114 spot fines, amounting to over Rs.55 million, have been processed via GovPay since the introduction of its online traffic fine payment mechanism in April this year.

Last month, GovPay rolled out the online traffic fine payment scheme in the North Western and North Central provinces, following training and awareness sessions for the officers from all police stations in both provinces.

Organised by the Sri Lanka Police and conducted by the officials from LankaPay and the Information and Communication Technology Agency of Sri Lanka (ICTA), the sessions aimed to educate the traffic police officers on how citizens can make payments via GovPay.

With this expansion, the citizens in five of the country’s provinces can now settle traffic fines via the government digital payment platform.

GovPay is a collaborative initiative between the ICTA and LankaPay, the national financial transaction network. It was launched in February this year, under the guidance of the Digital Economy Ministry. The platform was designed to streamline the public service delivery by allowing the citizens to complete government-related payments—including fines, taxes, bills and other service charges—digitally.

According to a social media post from LankaPay, GovPay traffic spot fine payments were introduced to enhance the public service delivery through digitalisation. Moreover, online traffic fine payments have become the digital payment platform’s biggest contributor in terms of transaction count.

Traffic fines can be paid through the online and mobile banking platforms of 14 banks and six fintech applications. These include BOC Flex, Sampath Vishwa, HNB Digital Banking and SOLO, NSB Pay, People’s Pay, ComBank Digital, DFCC Online Banking, Nations Direct Online Banking, NDB NEOS Online Banking, NSB Online Banking, Pan Asia Online Banking, SDB Internet Banking, Seylan Online Banking, LB Finance CIM, WEBXPAY, FriMi, Genie, Helakuru and iPay.

By the end of this year, LankaPay hopes to roll out the GovPay traffic fine payment scheme throughout the island. As of now, the Western, Southern, Northern, North Western and North Central provinces have been introduced to this facility.
