The consumer prices in the Colombo district rose by 2.1 percent in the 12 months through November 2025, unchanged from the levels seen in October, as both food and non-food prices eased.
However, the prices fell 0.2 percent in November from a month ago. Yet, the prices in December could soar, as the supplies and supply chains may have disrupted from the worst floods Sri Lanka has seen in the last couple of days, causing havoc in many parts of the country.
The Central Bank last week held the Overnight Policy Rate at 7.75 percent, as it considered the current interest rates are appropriate to bring inflation in the economy up to 5.0 percent – its medium-term target level – by the second half of next year.
The so-called core-prices, which are measured barring the often-volatile items such as food, energy and transport, rose by 2.4 percent in November from a year ago, accelerating from 2.2 percent in October.
The food prices rose by 3.0 percent in the 12 months through November 2025, easing from 3.5 percent through October, as the prices of many food goods fell.
This caused the food inflation to fall by 0.6 percent in November.
The prices of rice, sea fish, mangoes, sugar, chicken and many others fell in November from their October levels.
The prices of coconuts, vegetables, big onions and dried chilies rose among a few others.
Meanwhile, the non-food prices rose by 1.7 percent in the 12 months through November, picking up from 1.4 percent in October.
The monthly prices however fell 0.1 percent. This was because the prices of petrol fell, as part of the monthly revision of the fuel prices.
