Sri Lanka is actively seeking investments to foster the production of green hydrogen and green ammonia at the Colombo Port, to align with the prevailing trends in the global shipping industry.
“Vessel owners worldwide are increasingly investing in green technology to reduce emissions. Consequently, our ports must be well-equipped to accommodate these eco-friendly vessels,” Port and Shipping Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva said.
“Discussions in this regard have centred around green hydrogen, green ammonia and enhanced connectivity. While Sri Lanka’s economy may not be as extensive as others, we must align with these global trends and
deliver accordingly.

This necessitates attracting investment for green hydrogen and green ammonia production in the Port of Colombo, a significant challenge globally in the upcoming years. We have already reached out to institutions for expertise in this regard,” he added.
De Silva made these remarks at the Annual General Meeting of the Sri Lanka Association of Vessel Operators (SLAVO), held recently.

The SLAVO is Sri Lanka’s premier and exclusive member body representing ship owners and principals and their direct interests in Sri Lanka.  De Silva said that for Sri Lanka to remain competitive globally in the maritime sector, it is imperative to nurture a new generation of professionals.
He also stressed that pragmatic policies are vital for attracting foreign and private investors for port development.
He also revealed the government’s intention to transform the East Container Terminal into a more private-sector-oriented terminal, with the state’s involvement limited to administration and related matters.
With the expected growth in the maritime sector, de Silva noted that Sri Lanka requires additional terminals.  “Our ambitious North Port Development Project envisions four to six new terminals, all managed by the private sector, to attract further investment,” he said.
De Silva also highlighted the necessity of a Port Community System in the Port of Colombo. He said steps are being taken to address this and would soon seek expressions of interest from reputable organisations for this purpose.
