Video: UNP says no to Cameron’s call for int’l inquiry

The main opposition United National Party (UNP) said today it opposed the British Prime Minister’s call for an international inquiry into alleged war crimes committed by the Sri Lankan Army.

It said it was also opposed to any attempts to take Sri Lanka’s case before any kind of international court.

“The UNP will in no way support an international investigation on Sri Lanka. Our stance is that the implementation of the recommendations made by the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC) is sufficient to resolve the national question and to ensure the rights of all people,” General Secretary Tissa Attanayake told a news conference.

He accused the government of internationalising Sri Lanka’s internal affairs through the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM).

“At the end CHOGM turned out to be another human rights council. It was President Mahinda Rajapaksa who signed the CHOGM declaration 2013 where the Commonwealth Heads of State had agreed to an international court on human rights,” he said. (YP & LSP)
