The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) said today the manner in which some ministers behaved with regard to the visit of the UNHRC Chief to Sri Lanka had ruined the country’s image internationally.

“Some ministers gave her a warm welcome while others raised placards in protest. Some even shameless enough to propose marriage and humiliate her,” JVP General Secretary Tilvin Silva told a news conference.

He said it was not ethical to humiliate a woman, who happens to be the UN Human Rights High Commissioner and also a guest of Sri Lanka.

“Instead of displaying our sense of hospitality, some ministers behaved in an uncivilised manner causing irreparable damage to our country,” Mr. Silva said and added that it was the manner in which the Government had acted that had triggered the negative report on the human rights situation in Sri Lanka.

He said the Sri Lankan Government would have to face international intervention if it failed to carry out a credible and impartial internal investigation into allegations of Human right violations in the country.

Mr. Silva said the Government had failed to uphold democracy in the country and said it was attempting to deceive the people, the UNHRC Chief and the international community.

“Bringing the Police Department under the purview of a new ministry as recommended by LLRC and removing a few army camps in the Northern Province and handing the lands over to civilians just before her visit was an attempt to deceive the people,” he said.
