Sri Lanka and India had agreed to further strengthen their cooperation in defence during the bilateral talks held between President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi today, the NDTV said.

Addressing a joint press conference, Indian Premier Modi said that importance would be given to the fishermen’s issue and that they would address fishermen’s associations on both sides soon.

“We will encourage fishermen’s associations to meet soon and solutions must be taken,” he said.

While asserting that India was proud to be a trade partner of Sri Lanka, Modi said the two countries were at a moment of an unprecedented opportunity to take bilateral relations to a new level.

“We are committed to unlock the vast potential of our economic cooperation,” he said.
