Five boys and a girl aged between 2 and 14 years were found in the Pothupitiya area of Rakwana on Saturday after their parents had gone missing, police said.

According to the initial investigations the children had lived with their pasrents in a house on a tea estate on which both parents were working as labourers.

A few days ago, the mother had gone to hospital for treatment as she had felt ill. The mother had not come back that day and the father had gone to look for her.

But the father also not returned. After a few days the owner of the estate had informed the police, who had taken the children into custody.

The children were produced before the Rakwana Magistrate who ordered that they be handed over to the Kahawatte children's home. (Chaturaga Pradeep)
