Investigations underway into attack on TNA candidate's residence

The Police said they were investigating the attack on TNA candidate Ananthi Sasitharan’s residence at Chullipuram in Jaffna during which several of her supporters and a PAFFREL election monitor were injured.

Eight persons who were injured in the attack were admitted to the Jaffna hospital.

A van and a motorcycle parked at the residence were also damaged.

The candidate and her children were not injured, after her supporters had rushed them out of the residence.

Earlier the TNA and independent election monitors alleged that the yet unidentified group of attackers appeared to have included some army personnel as well.

Executive Director of local election watchdog, Rohana Hettiarachchi speaking to Daily Mirror Online said that a Lawyer Kanagarathnam Suhash who was on duty in the district was injured as a result of the attack.

“He had received a call and gone to the house where they were abusing the people present, thereafter many other individuals out of which some are reported to have been wearing uniforms similar to those of the Army had attacked them” he said.

However, the Army, which rejected the allegations against the Army, said it did not condone such violence and said that the allegations referring to the Army were baseless.

“This is a baseless allegation. The Security Forces have no involvement in this election-related violence. We do not condone such violent acts and regret that such preconceived allegations are made tarnishing the good image of the Security Forces that have contributed immensely to uplift the living standards of the war affected public while maintaining peace and stability in the region” Military spokesman Ruwan Wanigasooriya said

Police sources in the region said they are yet to ascertain the assailants, but said that many armed groups are active in the peninsula.

According to initial reports around 50 men armed with clubs and poles had been involved in the attack.

Ananthi Sasitharan is the wife of senior the former LTTE political leader Sinnathurai Sasitharan alias Ezhizhan.

As in the past several attempts to contact police spokesman Buddhika Siriwardena proved futile and the Police media unit said they were unaware of such an incident. ( Hafeel Farisz)
