Dhammadeepa Council to nurture religious amity

The newly-formed Dhammadeepa Council led by the Venerable Mahanayake Theras of the three Nikayas and the Diyawadane Nilame of the Sri Dalada Maligawa said today it would formulate a national plan to end religious tension in the country in a manner that was favourable to all religious groups.

Council member Ven. Omalpe Sobitha Thera told a media briefing at the BMICH in Colombo that the Council would initiate a countrywide programme to stop immoral, fraudulent and various forms of terrorist activities which had created social unrest.

“The answers to these problems should not come from the Government or from politicians but by religious leaders including the Buddhist clergy who have a responsibility to address such issues,” the Thera said.

He said the Council had already proposed to the Government the necessity to create a conducive environment to bring Christian, Islamic, Hindu leaders together to address what had become a national concern.

When asked about various Buddhist clergy groups that had been accused of causing racial and religious tension, Ven. Matale Dhammakusala Thera said it was a matter of concern.

“The minds of the people have been altered into believing that programmes mooted by groups are necessary to the country. But one of this movements had clashed with the Muslim community and created problems that went too far,” Ven. Anamaduwe Dhammadhassi Thera said.

Meanwhile the Diyawadane Nilame Pradeep Nilanga Dela said it was necessary to ensure unity among communities and to ensure that the people were not harassed or belittled for religious reasons. (OJ)
