Depression could develop into cyclone

Sri Lanka may be affected by adverse weather conditions with a possibility of a cyclone developing over the Bay of Bengal in the next few days, the Department of Meteorology said today.

A Met Department Spokesman told Daily Mirror that a low pressure area in South-East of the Bay of Bengal has intensified into a depression and it could develop itself into a cyclone within the next two or three days.

The prevailing depression is expected to affect the weather over the seas off the Eastern Coast by Thursday.

Showers or thundershowers are expected in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and Central Provinces and in the Galle and Matara Districts. Showers may spread to the North-Western province too. Heavy rainfall of more than 100 mm was also forecast.

Fairly heavy showers were recorded in various parts of the country with the highest rainfall of 84mm in Matugama, while Ratnapura received a rainfall of 42mm, Ratmalana 28mm and Colombo City 30mm as of this afternoon. (Yohan Perera)
