Boyfriend who held girlfriend’s hand gets bail

A youth was arrested and produced before the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court after his girlfriend had complained to the police that her boyfriend had sexually harassed her by holding her by the hand and attempting to drag her out of a three-wheeler.

Defence counsel Deemani Beddewela handing over a bundle of love letters and photographs to Court said her client had an affair with the 17-year-old girl for about four years.

She said her client had only come to meet his girlfriend and had no intention whatsoever to commit an offence.

The defence counsel said the girl had made the complaint with the intention of ending the love affair.

The Kollupitiya police said the youth had committed a punishable offence under section 345 of the Penal Code and asked Court to remand him till August 3.

Having listened to the submissions, Colombo Fort Magistrate Kanishka Wijeratne ordered that the suspect be released on bail. (Lakmal Sooriyagoda)
