The cabinet yesterday approved a road map for the implementation of the national action plan on human rights and the LLRC recommendations. Justice Minister Rauff Hakeem said this document would be presented at the universal periodic review in October.

The national action plan was prepared by a presidential task force headed by the presidential secretary.

Meanwhile, addressing a media conference in Colombo External Affairs Minister G.L Peiris said that the National Action Plan was formulated by a group of eight persons allied with government agencies and ministries and headed by President’s Secretary Lalith Weeratunga.

The Action plan deconstructs every recommendation in the LLRC report into a series of steps and assigns a key responsible agency, key performance indicator and time frames for completion. “Every recommendation has one or more step, and some of the recommendations are overlapping. What we have done is to break it down into its constituent parts and list out implementation strategies,” he said.

He also said the recommendation could be grouped into four areas, such as National policy, the last stages of the war, human rights and resettlement and development. (Dianne Silva) Pix by Kithsiri de Mel
