What Sri Lankans Can Watch This Weekend in Sport

JAN.17 (Mirror Sports) - Sri Lankan sports fans are set for another packed weekend, with major football clashes in the Premier League, key matches at the ICC Men’s Under-19 World Cup, and the start of the Australian Open tennis tournament. From evening kick-offs to daytime cricket and early tennis action, there is plenty on offer across different sports.

Premier League: Manchester Derby Headlines the Weekend

The standout fixture in the English Premier League takes place on Saturday, January 17, when Manchester United host Manchester City at 6.00 pm. The Manchester derby always carries added intensity, and both sides will be eager to claim bragging rights as well as vital league points.

Three matches kick off simultaneously at 8.30 pm. Chelsea face Brentford, Liverpool host Burnley, and Tottenham Hotspur take on West Ham United. Each fixture has its own significance, with teams chasing consistency as the season moves into its second half.

The day’s football concludes late at night with Nottingham Forest hosting Arsenal at 11.00 pm, a match that could have implications at both ends of the table.

Cricket: Under-19 World Cup Continues in Africa

The ICC Men’s Under-19 World Cup 2026, being co-hosted by Zimbabwe and Namibia, continues over the weekend, with several group matches scheduled.

On Saturday, January 17, Sri Lanka Under-19s take on Japan Under-19s in Windhoek, starting at 1.00 pm (Sri Lanka time). It will be an important outing for the young Sri Lankan side as they look to build momentum in the group stage. The same day also sees Bangladesh Under-19s face India Under-19s in Bulawayo.

Cricket continues on Sunday, January 18, with New Zealand Under-19s playing the United States in Bulawayo, while hosts Zimbabwe meet England Under-19s in Harare. Another Group D fixture sees Afghanistan Under-19s take on West Indies Under-19s in Windhoek.

With several strong teams in action, the weekend could begin to shape the early direction of the tournament.


Tennis: Australian Open Gets Underway

The Australian Open begins on Sunday, January 18, marking the first Grand Slam of the year. Several notable first-round matches are scheduled.

In the men’s draw, Alexander Zverev faces Gabriel Diallo, while Carlos Alcaraz takes on Adam Walton. The women’s draw features Aryna Sabalenka against T. Rakotomanga Rajaonah, and Emma Raducanu meeting Mananchaya Sawangkaew.

The opening rounds will be closely followed as top players begin their campaigns in Melbourne.
