Welikada prisoners strike called off

The protest by prisoners which had continued for two days on top of the roof of the Welikada Prison was called off this evening, Prisons spokesman Chandana Ekanayake said.

He said the protest began in the wake of the release of former MP Duminda Silva under a presidential pardon.

The inmates commenced a hunger strike from Friday (24) afternoon and demanded that their death sentence be commuted to life imprisonment.
