Uni students must finish education and fulfil responsibility to society: Education Minister

The primary objective of University students should be to finish their education as soon as possible and fulfil their responsibility to society, Education Minister Susil Premajayantha said.

He said this during a discussion held at the ministry today.

“Although University education has to be paid for in many developed countries, it is a great privilege for Sri Lankan students to get their first degree without paying any fees,” he said.

“Due to students overstaying their welcome in universities for more than 8 to 10 years without completing their studies within the prescribed period, new students miss their opportunities to get a university education,” he said.

The Minister requested the University Grants Commission (UGC) and Universities take a joint decision regarding the number of opportunities given to university students to appear for free examinations, he said. (Chaturanga Pradeep Samarawickrama)
