Thundershowers, severe lightning expected after 1 p.m.

Colombo, May 25 (Daily Mirror) - The of Meteorology Department has issued a warning that thundershowers accompanied by severe lightning are likely to occur at several places in the Uva Province and in the Ampara and Batticaloa districts after 1.00 p.m. today.

The department said temporary localized strong winds may also occur during thundershowers and urged the public to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by lightning activity.

People have been advised to seek shelter indoors during thunderstorms and avoid taking cover under trees. The Meteorology Department also warned against remaining in open areas such as paddy fields, tea plantations and open water bodies during adverse weather conditions.

The public has further been advised to avoid using wired telephones and connected electrical appliances during thunderstorms. Open vehicles including bicycles, tractors and boats should also not be used during lightning activity.

Authorities also cautioned people to be vigilant of fallen trees and power lines and requested the public to contact local disaster management authorities in case of emergencies.
