Suspect in Vidya murder case commits suicide in Jaffna Prison

Colombo, May 25 (Daily Mirror) - A suspect remanded in connection with the rape and murder of schoolgirl Sivaloganathan Vidya has reportedly committed suicide while in custody at the Jaffna Prison, according to prison authorities.

The deceased has been identified as 46-year-old Poobalan Jayakumar, who had been held in remand custody over his alleged involvement in the brutal 2015 crime that shocked the nation. The incident is said to have taken place late last night within the prison premises.

Earlier this month, the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka upheld the death sentences for four men, including the main suspect known as "Swiss Kumar," for the 2015 abduction, gang rape, and murder of 18-year-old schoolgirl Sivaloganathan Vidya in Jaffna.
