Suspect arrested for brutal double murder of elderly couple in Hatton

Colombo, May 24 (Daily Mirror) - A team of officers from the Hatton Police Station has arrested the main suspect involved in the brutal double murder of an elderly couple inside their home-cum-shop in Dikoya, Hatton. The suspect was arrested along with a haul of stolen gold jewelry that had been plundered during the crime.

The victims, a 75-year-old woman and an 85-year-old man, were hacked to death with a sharp weapon on the night of May 21, 2026 in Hatton. Following the gruesome discovery, the Hatton Police immediately launched ab investigation to track down the perpetrator.

Acting on a breakthrough, police officers executed a special operation on May 23, 2026, and managed to arrest the suspect while he was hiding in the Robgill/Petroso tea estate in Bogawantalawa. The arrested individual has been identified as a 37-year-old resident of Hali-Ela.

At the time of his arrest, Police recovered a collection of stolen gold jewelry from the suspect's possession, including a gold necklace, a pendant, a pair of earrings, and a traditional gold Thali (pendant). The recovered items are believed to have been robbed from the victims after they were murdered. The Hatton Police are conducting further investigations into the incident.
