Some restaurants, hotels serve food unfit for human consumption

A survey conducted by the Public Health Inspectors (PHI) found that 18 percent of restaurants and hotels in Sri Lanka served food unfit for human consumption, Chairman of the Public Health Inspectors Union of Sri Lanka Upul Rohana said.

He told reporters that 55 percent of food stations in Sri Lanka were in very good condition while some 27 percent were in satisfactory condition.

He said the statistics were based on a survey conducted by PHIs on restaurants and hotels in Sri Lanka in 2022.

Rohana said they were taking steps to bring the 18 percent of unhygienic food stations at least to the quality of category B in their standings.

He said they were facing practical issues in improving the standard of the hotels and restaurants as there was no permanent staff in those places.

"The staff in those places get changed constantly due to various reasons such as salary issues. We are practically unable to train the staff and subject them to health checkups because of this reason," he said. (Ajith Siriwardana)
