Colombo, May 2 (Daily Mirror) - Claiming that certain opposition politicians are plotting to destabilise the government and create turmoil in the country, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake said yesterday such ploys will be unsuccessful as the stability of the government is relying on people's trust.

Speaking at the National People's Power (NPP) Nuwara Eliya District May Day rally, he said people across the country in the North, South and the Malayagam community keep trust in the government adding that a government of the working people has come to power for the first time in the country.

"A small opposition group is meeting either in a former minister's house or in a political party office and claims to launch plans to send the government home. They will not be able to do it at all. They are only trying to destabilise the government and create turmoil in the country. The stability of the government is relying on people's trust. People are with the government," he said.

The President said opposition groups are worried and perturbed as massive stocks of drugs are being raided, underworld connections are being disclosed and the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) and the Bribery Commission have expedited their investigations.

The President said a large number of fraudsters, corrupt individuals and thieves will be imprisoned within 2026, claiming that cases against ten individuals are being taken up this month alone.

He said a series of cases including some high profile cases are lined up in court.

The President said the Criminal Investigation Department and the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption, have been reinforced to expedite ongoing probes.

The President said the government will act according to the people's mandate and implement the law against criminals, the underworld, drug smugglers, fraudsters and corrupt individuals.

"We will impose the law against everyone equally disregarding whether it is a former President, former Prime Minister, former First Lady or former President's son. We will act according to the people's mandate," he said.
