Sri Lanka's animal husbandry industry has been severely affected by the shortage of animal feed and the rise in prices, Agriculture Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said.

While addressing the USSEC-US Soybean Export Council annual conference in Washington, USA, the Minister said that there has been a collapse in the animal husbandry sector in Sri Lanka due to the COVID-19 epidemic, as well as the collapse of the world economy and geopolitical issues in other countries.

During the official meeting with Kim Reynolds, the Governor of Iowa in the US, she asked about the economic recession that Sri Lanka is currently facing.

However, due to the positive steps taken under the leadership of the current President, Sri Lanka's economy is heading in the right direction towards the year 2023.

Minister Amaraweera also thanked the US for providing great support to Sri Lanka at this critical juncture.

During the address at the conference, he said the farmers in Sri Lanka are not much interested in cultivating soybeans because they are not aware of the global demand for it and also because of the lack of good market.

Therefore, the minister also requested that the Lankan farmers to express their support to encourage cultivating soya beans. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)
