Results of animal census announced

Colombo, June 12 (Daily Mirror) - The Agriculture, Livestock, Land and Irrigation Ministry has released the findings of the recently conducted national animal census.

According to the report, the country is home to 5.17 million Toque monkeys, 1.74 million monkeys, 2.66 million giant squirrels, and 4.34 million peacocks.

Officials said the survey was carried out to support wildlife management, ecological research, and agricultural planning, as these species often interact with human settlements and farmland.

The Ministry noted that the updated figures will help authorities design more effective conservation and land-use strategies in the coming months.
