Red alert issued for 11 districts; over 150mm rainfall forecast: Met Dept.

A red alert (Take Action) on heavy deluge has been issued for eleven districts, the Department of Meteorology said today.

They said fairly heavy rainfalls of more than 150 mm could be expected at some places in the South-western parts of the country and in the north-western province.

The heavy rains are expected to continue in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and Central provinces and Galle and Matara districts, they said. 

Accordingly, the 11 districts including Puttalam, Kurunegala, Gampaha, Kegalla, Kandy, Colombo, Nuwara Eliya, Kalutara, Ratnapura, Galle and Matara have been alerted over the weather conditions.

Amber colour code (Be prepared) advisory was issued for four districts such as Matale, Badulla, Monaragala and Hambantota, the Met. Dept said.

Rainfall gauge indicators installed in the country have recorded the following rainfall levels from 8.30 am yesterday (3) to 1.30 a.m this morning (4).

247 mm rainfall in Eheliyagoda in he Ratnapura district, 218.5mm rain from Ingiriya in the Kalutara district, 208.7mm in Katunayake in the Gampaha district, 193mm in Horana in the Kalutara district, 173.5mm in Minuwangoda in the Gampaha district, 156.5mm in Bandaragama in the Kalutara district and 155mm rainfall in Yakkala in the Gampaha district.
