Rare flying object creates panic among some people in Puttalam

Colombo, June 2 (Daily Mirror) - A brilliant object flying across the sky over the Puttalam town in the early hours of yesterday morning caused much panic, and the people dashed out of their homes to catch a glimpse. Several of them have been able to take photos of it.

They said the mysterious object was several feet long and that it had a tail of fire similar to that of a rocket or a missile. They said flying faster than an aircraft at an elevation of about 300ft, it disappeared into the distant skies over the Puttalam lagoon as far as the naked eye could see.

Meanwhile, those who were alarmed by the possibility of danger had run away and hid in safer locations. The people have different views about that mysterious phenomenon, but without any evidence.

They expect the authorities concerned to provide an explanation about it.

Commenting on the incident, Professor of Physics at the University of Colombo, Sri Lanka and Chairman of Arthur C. Clarke for Modern Technologies said the object could be a meteorite. “The object might have been a meteorite if it had a fiery tail.” Meteorites could be visible during the night at any time of the year. Therefore, this could be a meteorite,” he said. However, he said a broad study has to be conducted to come out with a definite conclusion," Professor Jayaratne added.
