Colombo, March 15 (Daily Mirror) - The government has decided to implement the National Fuel Authorization System using QR codes for fuel distribution with effect from 6.00 a.m. today (March 15), the Ministry of Energy announced.

The decision has been taken in view of the ongoing military situation in the Middle East, which has disrupted global fuel supply routes and caused an abnormal increase in fuel demand in the country. Authorities said the existing fuel reserves must be carefully managed to ensure that economic activities continue without interruption.

Officials have also identified illegal fuel stockpiling by certain groups as a major reason for the increased demand. The government expects that the QR code system will help curb such rackets and ensure the smooth continuation of normal life and economic activities.

Accordingly, no fuel will be issued from any filling station without a valid QR code from 6.00 a.m. on March 15.

Vehicle owners who previously registered for the QR code can download it from fuelpass.gov.lk from midnight on March 14, provided that the vehicle ownership and registered phone number remain unchanged. Those who have changed vehicle ownership or contact details can update their information through the same website from 6.00 a.m. on March 15.

Vehicles that have not been previously registered, including newly registered vehicles with the Department of Motor Traffic, must complete registration through the website starting from 6.00 a.m. today.

The weekly fuel quota for vehicles has been determined according to vehicle categories. Motor cars will receive 15 litres per week, motorcycles 5 litres, vans 40 litres, three-wheelers 15 litres, buses 60 litres, motor lorries 200 litres, quadricycles 5 litres and special purpose vehicles 40 litres.

Meanwhile, special fuel distribution arrangements will be implemented by relevant institutions to ensure uninterrupted services for production activities and essential sectors. Fuel for private passenger transport buses will be issued through the Sri Lanka Transport Board.
