Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Nalinda Jayatissa said that an investigation has been launched into allegations involving a National People’s Power MP from the Kalutara District, who allegedly berated a police sergeant attached to the Welipenna Police for taking action against an illicit liquor trader.
It was reported that ruling party MP Sanjeewa Ranasinghe allegedly verbally abused the police sergeant after the latter arrested a suspect involved in the illegal liquor trade in the area.
The sergeant later lodged a complaint with the Officer-in-Charge (OIC) of the Welipenna Police about the incident.
According to the complaint, the MP allegedly threatened the sergeant with a transfer to Vavuniya.
It was reported that the MP made the threat via mobile phone, having obtained the sergeant’s number from the OIC.
The MP reportedly called the OIC and asked for details about a police officer named Ajith, including his residence, before accusing the officer of filing false cases against individuals.
The sergeant told the OIC that the MP had used harsh language and severely reprimanded him, reiterating the threat of a transfer.
The conversation between the MP and the OIC, as well as the sergeant's allegations, has been reportedly recorded in the police information book by the OIC.
When questioned about the incident during the weekly Cabinet briefing, Minister Jayatissa confirmed that an investigation had commenced and said, “the truth will be revealed soon.”
Meanwhile, police said a report has been requested from the Welipenna OIC, and a formal inquiry is underway, led by an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP).
