Colombo, May 21 (Daily Mirror) - The Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) has urged the public to follow proper electrical safety measures when illuminating Vesak lanterns and decorations to prevent accidents during the festive season.
Issuing a public notice, the PUCSL advised consumers to use only properly rated electrical plugs, including straight-through satin-finish plugs, when setting up Vesak lighting.
The Commission also warned against the use of multi-plug adapters, noting that such devices are prohibited under safety regulations.
The PUCSL further highlighted the importance of ensuring that household Residual Current Devices (RCDs), commonly known as trip switches, are functioning properly with a sensitivity level of 30mA (0.03A). Consumers were advised to regularly test the device using the “T” (Test) button.
In addition, the Commission cautioned the public never to bypass the trip switch when installing festival lighting, stressing that it serves as the primary protection against electrocution.
The PUCSL also urged the public to inspect all power supply wires and ensure they are free from damage before use.
Theys said the advisory was issued as part of the Commission’s efforts to promote a safe and accident-free Vesak celebration across the country.
