PM Harini holds talks with UK Foreign Secretary

May 21 (Daily Mirror) - Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya who is on an official visit to London, United Kingdom, to participate in the 43rd Commonwealth of Learning (COL) Board of Governors Meeting 2026, held a bilateral meeting with Yvette Cooper MP, Foreign Secretary of the United Kingdom. 

The Sri Lankan delegation included High Commissioner to the United Kingdom Nimal Senadheera and officials from the Sri Lankan High Commission.

During the meeting, Prime Minister Amarasuriya expressed Sri Lanka’s gratitude to the United Kingdom for its support following Cyclone Ditwa, particularly in ongoing rebuilding and recovery efforts. She also commended the UK’s role in facilitating bilateral trade and export growth for Sri Lanka.

The Prime Minister briefed the UK side on Sri Lanka’s recent economic developments, policy priorities, commitment to human rights and reconciliation, and the country’s positive growth trajectory.

Both sides discussed global geopolitical developments, energy sector challenges, and the importance of regional connectivity and long-term energy security. They also emphasized the need to strengthen structured academic mobility frameworks and ensure fairness and integrity within migration systems.

The meeting concluded with a reaffirmation of both countries’ commitment to enhancing bilateral cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
