While condemning the media reports circulating on social media and news websites, the Vehicle Importers Association of Sri Lanka (VIASL) and the Vehicle Importers Association of Lanka (VIAL) said there was no agreement with the Government on obtaining permission to import vehicles under a quota system.
VIASL President S.K. Gamage told the Daily Mirror that a news item is circulating these days claiming that the government and vehicle importers have reached an agreement to re-import vehicles under a specific quota.
He said there was a meeting with President's Secretary P.B. Jayasundera at the Presidential Secretariat today, but we did not discuss about such quota system to resume vehicle imports.
While considering the current economic situation and as a responsible vehicle import Association in the country, we never thought of appealing to the Government to grant such permissions for vehicle imports, Mr. Gamage said.
Therefore, both Associations thought of issuing a joint announcement denying the media reports. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)
