Colombo, August 26 (Daily Mirror) - Measures are being taken to reduce irregularities reported in the issuing of printed medical certificates by the National Transport Medical Institute (NTMI), Nugegoda, for obtaining driving licenses, Deputy Minister of Ports and Civil Aviation Janitha Kodituwakku said.
He said that until now, the NTMI had been issuing medical certificates on printed paper, which had given rise to various irregularities. To address this, the government has decided to introduce an online system aimed at ensuring transparency and minimising malpractice.
The Deputy Minister made these remarks during an inspection tour of the Department of Motor Transport’s Werahera branch yesterday (25) afternoon.
Explaining further, he said that drivers are currently required to visit Werahera to renew their licenses, primarily for fingerprint verification, which causes inconvenience to the public.
“We hope to change this system within a month and introduce a process that allows license renewal without visiting Werahera. Initial work on this initiative has already commenced,” he added.
