Colombo, May 25 (Daily Mirror) - Health authorities have raised concerns over a rise in meningitis cases reported from several parts of the country, with the first patient identified at a school in Deniyaya.

Chief Epidemiologist Dr. Palitha Karunapema said that 28 meningitis patients had been reported from Diyatalawa, while 13 cases were recorded in Walimada. He added that 25 patients were currently receiving treatment at Rikillagaskada Hospital.

According to health officials, cases detected at the Deniyaya school were identified as viral meningitis, which has reportedly spread mainly among schoolchildren.

The main symptoms of the disease include headache, vomiting and fever. Several affected individuals had been admitted to hospitals, and authorities said their condition had improved after receiving treatment.

Dr. Karunapema urged the public to remain alert during the ongoing rainy weather and Vesak season, particularly at dansals, stressing the importance of maintaining proper hygiene practices to prevent the spread of the disease.

Health authorities noted that meningitis can spread through contaminated food, water and close personal contact, and urged the public to seek immediate medical attention if symptoms develop.
