Feb.14 (Mirror Sports) - South Africa stormed to a commanding seven-wicket win over New Zealand national cricket team in Group D of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup, powered by a breathtaking captain’s knock from Aiden Markram.
Chasing 176, the Proteas tore into the target with ruthless intent, racing to 83-1 inside the powerplay. Markram smashed an unbeaten 86 off 44 balls, bringing up his half-century in just 19 deliveries — the joint-fastest of the tournament — and never relinquishing control.
New Zealand had earlier posted 175-7 after aggressive starts from Finn Allen (31 off 17) and Mark Chapman (48 off 26). However, Marco Jansen’s crucial 4-40 haul halted their surge and kept the total within reach.
From there, it was one-way traffic. Quinton de Kock and Ryan Rickelton provided brisk support before Markram took full control. David Miller sealed the win in style, launching a towering six as South Africa cruised home with 17 balls to spare.
The victory keeps the Proteas unbeaten and on the brink of Super 8 qualification, while New Zealand must now defeat Canada to stay in contention.
