Lifting curfew alone not sufficient, say PHIs

Lifting of the curfew alone was not enough to say that country is safe but it is of utmost importance to monitor the situation daily, Public Health Inspector’s Union of Sri Lanka (PHIUSL) Secretary M. Balasooriya said.

Speaking to Daily Mirror, he said relaxing the curfew in the areas did not indicate that the country was safe from Covid-19 risk but the authorities must consider the fact that Sri Lanka was not out of the woods yet.

“Although there is a comparative decrease in reporting of cases from the Minuwangoda cluster, new clusters may emerge if authorities failed to monitor the situation daily. He emphasized that people should not be allowed to act irresponsibly.

“Therefore, the authorities have to be tough on those who violate and ignore health guidelines,” he said.

Balasooriya also stressed the importance to continue to carry out random PCR tests in the Colombo Municipality where a considerable number of cases had been reported.

“It is also essential to pay special attention to people entering the Colombo area when the curfew lifted,” he said.

Meanwhile, the PHIs said they were satisfied with the Government’s decision to isolate areas where risk is still on. (Sheain Fernandopulle)
