Colombo, June 3 (Daily Mirror) - An elephant that had been roaming the Wandurussa forest area in the Mahawa region with a leg injury is now recovering, the Mahawa Wildlife Office said.
They said the elephant, initially discovered with a swollen leg in the Wandurussa Grama Niladhari Division, had been under veterinary treatment.
Officials reported that after showing signs of recovery, the elephant began moving again on May 31. By the morning of June 1, the animal had travelled from Wandurussa to the Polpithigama area in Mahawa, accompanied by two other wild elephants.
However, on June 2, the elephant fell into a pond near the Polpithigama tank. Despite the fall, no new external injuries were found.
Wildlife veterinary officers promptly attended to the elephant, providing further treatment to the injured leg. With the assistance of an excavator, the team was able to lift the elephant out of the water and safely return it to land.
Today (June 3), officials from the Mahawa Wildlife Sanctuary continued care by providing food and water. Wildlife authorities confirmed that the elephant is currently in stable condition and continuing to recover under close observation.
