Colombo, April 13 (Daily Mirror) - The period between the old year and the new, known as ‘Punya Kalaya’ or ‘Nonagathaya’—the inauspicious time—will be observed from 8:57 PM on April 13 to 9:45 AM on April 14."

During this neutral period, all work is traditionally paused. People refrain from routine activities and instead focus on religious observances such as visiting temples, offering prayers, and engaging in spiritual reflection.

The first part of the Punya Kalaya (from April 13, 8:57 PM) is entirely dedicated to religious practices. Following the dawn of the New Year at 3:21 AM on April 14, people begin auspicious activities such as lighting the hearth, cooking the first meal, making transactions, and starting work—believed to bring blessings and prosperity in the year ahead.
