The government will never intervene politically in incidents such as the attack on the house of journalist Chamuditha Samarawickrema and said an impartial inquiry will be held into the incident, External Affairs Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris said.

Minister Peiris said that the proper mechanism for such cases would be activated through the police, the Attorney General's Department and the judiciary.

He also said the legal system against a journalist or anyone else is clearly embedded in the Sri Lankan legal system and, therefore, operates without political influence.

From the number of criticisms leveled against the government through print and electronic media, it is clear that there is no media repression in the country. 10% is about positive aspects of the government and the remaining 90% is criticism.

The government has no problem filing complaints to show anyone in Geneva or anywhere. Prof. Peiris said that media freedom is an essential feature of a living democratic society. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)
