Colombo, August 14 (Daily Mirror) - Newly appointed Inspector General of Police (IGP) Priyantha Weerasuriya revealed that politicians supporting underworld figures and drug traffickers have already been identified and will face legal action in due course.
Speaking to the media after officially assuming duties today, IGP Weerasuriya said that there is an urgent need to strengthen existing laws to effectively combat the rising crime and drug-related activities in the country.
He said that the current legal framework is insufficient to support sustained raids and enforcement actions.
“The President, the Minister of Justice and the Minister of Public Security have been informed that special operations to curb crime and drug networks cannot continue effectively under existing laws,” he said and added that new legislation is being drafted to address these gaps.
“We are working on laws to deal with individuals who persist in engaging in criminal and corrupt activities. The international community has extended its fullest support and we are taking steps to enhance cooperation and utilise their assistance,” he added.
IGP Weerasuriya also addressed the growing number of violent incidents, highlighting that shortcomings in the current legal system are being reviewed and amended to bolster crime-fighting efforts. He said many crimes, including the recent shootings, are orchestrated through their local associates by individuals operating from overseas.
He further revealed that some individuals involved in these criminal networks include deserters from the armed forces and even members of the police force.
“We are taking steps to address this issue starting with a comprehensive cleansing of the police service, followed by a broader societal focus,” he said.
Commenting on the circulation of illegal weapons, the IGP said that a significant number of firearms are currently in the possession of civilians.
“These include weapons from the tri-forces, former LTTE arms, stolen firearms and some linked to the Police Department itself. Investigations are ongoing,” he explained.
He stressed that strict disciplinary and legal action will be taken against police officers found to have ties to criminal or drug-related activities.
“Officers who are proven guilty will be suspended,” the IGP asserted.
