Colombo, June 18 (Daily Mirror) - The Health Promotion Bureau has launched a nationwide awareness campaign urging the public to take immediate action to prevent the spread of dengue as cases continue to rise across the country.
In a public message, the Bureau called on households, schools and workplaces to ensure that mosquitoes are not allowed to breed by inspecting and eliminating stagnant water at least once a week.
The Bureau advised the public to pay close attention to potential breeding sites, including gardens and surrounding areas with flower pots, coconut shells, used tyres, plastic and yoghurt cups, empty bottles and tins. It also warned that indoor containers such as flower pots, refrigerator trays, buckets and water barrels, as well as roof gutters blocked with leaves, can become mosquito breeding grounds if left unattended.
Workplaces and schools were also urged to regularly inspect their premises and remove any stagnant water where mosquitoes could breed.
Meanwhile, health officials warned that a fever lasting more than 48 hours should not be ignored, as it may be a symptom of dengue.
The Bureau urged anyone experiencing prolonged fever to seek immediate medical attention, particularly pregnant women, young children, the elderly and those suffering from chronic illnesses, who are at a higher risk of developing severe complications from the disease.
