Colombo, June 18 (Daily Mirror) - The government has assured preschool teachers that the ongoing reforms in Sri Lanka's early childhood development sector will not jeopardise their employment, urging them not to be misled by misinformation surrounding the new policy changes.

Issuing a statement, the Women and Child Affairs Ministry  said concerns had emerged due to misconceptions being spread about the reforms, but stressed that the objective is to strengthen the quality and professionalism of preschool education rather than reduce employment opportunities.

As part of the reforms, the government is introducing professional development programmes through the National Vocational Education system and government-registered vocational training institutions. These programmes will cater to both existing preschool teachers and those intending to join the profession in the future.

The Ministry said the reforms are aimed at improving professional standards while safeguarding teachers' rights and enhancing the recognition of their role in shaping future generations.

The government also highlighted measures already taken to improve the welfare of preschool teachers, noting that the monthly Teacher's Pride Allowance was increased from Rs. 5,000 to Rs. 6,000 soon after the current administration assumed office.

It added that discussions are already underway to further increase the allowance and introduce a pension scheme for preschool teachers.

Reiterating its commitment to the sector, the government said it respects the professional rights of preschool teachers and seeks to create a more respected and sustainable profession through the ongoing reforms.
