Colombo, May 5 (Daily Mirror) - A viral video showing an alleged birthday celebration inside the high-security Galle Prison has triggered public concern and prompted an official investigation into possible security lapses and breaches of prison regulations.
The footage shows inmates in the ‘E’ ward cutting a cake and using mobile phones, items strictly prohibited within prison premises, to record the event.
The celebration is reportedly linked to Hatthimuni Namal Shantha, also known as “Podiya,” an associate of underworld figure “Ahungalle Loku Patty,” who is facing serious charges, including alleged involvement in contract killings and large-scale drug trafficking.
The incident has triggered criticism, with concerns raised over alleged lapses in prison oversight and claims of preferential treatment for certain inmates.
In response, the Department of Prisons has launched an investigation into the matter.
Prisons Commissioner and Spokesperson A.C. Gajanayake said the Superintendent of Galle Prison has been instructed to submit an immediate report, while authorities are working to determine how prohibited items, including mobile phones and food items, were brought into the high-security ward.
It was reported that several individuals seen in the video have since been released on bail.
